Athlete Spotlight!

 In Latest Workout

We have a new series of blog posts that will be released from time to time and we are calling it the athlete spotlight! This series will be devoted to our athletes we will ask them a few questions and get an idea of why they do CrossFit, who they are and some other interesting facts!

To kick off the series our first athlete is:

“a woman who will tell you her age will tell you other things too” that is a quote from the late, great Mary Kay Ash of Mary Kay Cosmetics fame, but since we are doing a survey and I am telling other things, I’ll tell you, I’m 46.

When did you first start CrossFitting?
I started in January 2014.

When did you first start training at StoneAgeFuel?
January 2014

What is your favorite workout/movement?
Box Jumps, because I can do them. Even if it is on a short box!

Least favorite workout/movement?
Wall Balls, because I hurt like crazy when I’m done!

Tell us about your sports/fitness background.
I grew up a skinny kid and was very active, but for sports I played softball in Elko for a couple seasons, because that’s all there was to do. I took weightlifting in HS for my PE credits, because I hated to run. Never really into sports.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first workout… what was it, and how did it feel?
I was first exposed to CrossFit when my husband found the CrossFit StoneAgeFuel website and told me I should go, I said, “nah.” I don’t remember my first workout specifically, all I know is I felt pretty rubber legged afterwards!

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CrossFit at StoneAgeFuel? (before/after)
I have knee caps for the first time in years and years, I really feel that taking a sit down job is one of the worst things I could have done, I also think that my one hour each way commute is a huge hinderance to getting slim. I have definition in my shoulders, I have calf muscles.

What changes in your life have you experienced from StoneAgeFuel that were totally unexpected?
How much more committed I am to this than any other workout I’ve done. I always just wanted to lose weight, which I still do but here I want to do things like be able to do double unders, my mom says so I can be like Matthew Modine (in Vision Quest, if you have not seen this movie, this is a must see!!!).

Please share with us any favorite StoneAgeFuel moments.
“The weigh in/measurement day when even though I hadn’t lost as much weight as I wanted, I had lost 5 inches from my hips and I never expected that!

When I did my first box jump, wow! Being able to duck walk, I always thought parallel squats were it but you can’t do that and duck walk, it took a lot of getting my knees ready to be able to do that, I actually practice squats quite frequently.

Finishing that one workout with the pushups and running, it was very emotional for me to complete that, even though I went over time a little bit!”

Any advice for people just getting started?
Only compare yourself to yourself, you are stronger than you were yesterday! You are doing so much to improve yourself by being here and giving it your best throughout your workout. Don’t give up! You got this!

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit at StoneAgeFuel?
My hobbies are holistic nutrition (I’m currently taking this course), crocheting, cake decorating, gardening, riding quads, checking out old mining places and rock hounding.
